What a privilege for me to be one of the first in the world
to read Christopher Patrick’s priceless treasure. Quite
literally – it is awesome!! I could now officially consider
myself among the elite of ABBA fans as I so much appreciate
this intricately detailed and enjoyable “encyclopedia”
coming from Chris’ heart, and the many passages of
fascinating music notation which he has provided to
illustrate it.
With much historic data that sets Chris’ book apart, this
great work of truly international magnitude manifests
enlightening dimensions in ABBA’s body of work. It is a
wonderful expose, plumbing the depths of the special
techniques employed by these four legendary musical geniuses
in composing, music arranging, vocal arranging and record
production.
No doubt it will be an invaluable tool in the future as a
textbook in musical appreciation, when ABBA music may still
be taught chronologically as the next step after The Beatles
along the path of evolution in popular harmony music culture
of the 20th Century.
I am quite stunned to have the opportunity to hereby express
my appreciation of what ABBA has given the world by saying
my own ‘thank you for the music’, and all these years later
I have been thrilled to learn that The Seekers’
Aussie/British sound in the mid 60s was an early influence
on the four Swedish icons (thanks to our own vocal arranger,
Seekers’ tenor/guitarist Keith Potger and composer/producer
Tom Springfield).
Chris Patrick’s expertise as a cellist and arranger himself,
his dedication and genuine love of music, and particularly
his deep appreciation and profound understanding of ABBA,
have all combined to create a truly respectful revelation
which will take millions of existing aficionados (many of
whom already “know everything there is to know” about
Sweden’s musical gift to the world) to new heights of
awareness.
Through ever changing times and fashions, this book will no
doubt play a significant role in extending the longevity of
ABBA’s musical works of art, and Christopher Patrick
deserves a medal for preserving and crystallising archival
“moments in time” for posterity.
